Unlike most APS-C cameras, it doesn't compromise on resolution thanks to its 32.5MP sensor. ![]() On top of that, though, the R7 does everything you could ask of it. My creaky old EF 75-300mm lens becomes a whopping 120-480mm on this camera! It also boasts the same bleeding-edge autofocus system found in the flagship camera, which I called a cheat code for wildlife photography. Its blistering 30fps maximum shooting speed is on par with the flagship Canon EOS R3, and the 1.6x crop factor means that the effective focal length of your lenses is extended. Of course, the Canon EOS R7 still retains its pedigree when it comes to wildlife, sports and action. However, more than just doing the same thing but without a mirror, Canon has turned these speed-focused wildlife specialists into an all-purpose performer that can handle anything you throw at it. The R7 is the mirrorless replacement for three of the most popular DSLRs that Canon ever made: the EOS 90D, EOS 7D and EOS 80D. Nothing like owning a really expensive camera that you've quickly grown to dislike. Never thought to check when I bought it if it could host a wired remote. Using the RC, it wants me to make multiple attempts to wake up the focus via the RC's AF-ON button before it will accept a command to fire the shutter. If I'm working without a RC, the camera shutter will fire reliably, whether or not I've used my AF-ON button to establish focus first (fine, I'm a grown-up). The problem might be that it doesn't like being set up with back-button focus if using a bluetooth RC (actually, it doesn't like ImageEdge Mobile either - what a clunky unreliable faff that is!). Just when I reach my decisive moment, the bluetooth remote/camera goes all indecisive & will only agree to fire the shutter once I've stabbed at the AF-ON/shutter buttons on the remote and sworn a few times. We've been shooting the a7C with both its kit zoom and the sensibly compact FE 35mm F1.8, to see what the camera offers.īiggest disappointment is I can't attach a wired RC for reliable control of the shutter when using a tripod. The a7C's combination of size, image quality, AF performance and battery life make it a superb travel camera, but some awkward aspects of operation, including its small viewfinder, hold it back as a photographer's choice. Video is good but its operation can be a little awkward. The a7C's main improvement over the a7 III is an autofocus system that integrates all its subject recognition capabilities so you don't need to mess around changing modes to get the most out of it. ![]() Dynamic range is excellent but you need to shoot large, uncompressed Raw files to get the full benefit. The a7C produces both Raw and JPEG images that are a match for any of its peers. But there's a price to be paid, and this isn't necessarily a budget option. This could make it a powerful travel or family camera. The a7C's main strengths are its size and convenience. It still handles pretty well, though, with a solid body and a small but pretty comfortable grip. The a7C has three dials, all controlled using your thumb. This means a smaller viewfinder but few other compromises. ![]() The a7C fits almost all the capabilities of the a7 III into a body that has more in common with the a6000 series. The Sony a7C is available at a price of around $1799 ($2399 CAD) or with the new collapsible 28-60mm F4-5.6 kit zoom for around $2099 ($2699 CAD).įrom the camera's controls to the image and video quality it's capable of, find out what exactly what you want to know about the a7C right here. Large 'Z-type' battery, rated to 740 shots per charge.Fully articulating 921k-dot touchscreen.Oversampled 4K video at up to 30p, including 8-bit S-Log and HLG.'Real-time tracking' AF system with human head, face, eye, and animal recognition.Bionz X processor (same as in the a7 III).A new retractable kit zoom is being launched along with the a7C to help maintain those size savings. A lot of work has clearly gone into making this one of the smallest full frame cameras available, whereas a lot of the features and capabilities are familiar. ![]()
